Heritage Guide

What Are Lederhosen?

Lederhosen — literally "leather breeches" — are traditional knee-length or short leather trousers worn since the late Middle Ages across the Alpine regions of Southern Germany, Austria and South Tyrol. Originally the hard-wearing workwear of hunters and farmers, they became the defining symbol of Bavarian identity in the 19th century.

The three core styles are Short Lederhosen (Kurze) for classic Oktoberfest wear, Bundhosen for cooler evenings, and Long Lederhosen for formal occasions — each crafted from goat, deer or cow leather and finished with hand-embroidered Alpine motifs, worn with Hosenträger suspenders, Loferl socks and Haferl shoes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it offensive for a non-German to wear lederhosen?

No. Lederhosen are traditional Bavarian attire worn by both locals and visitors at Oktoberfest and cultural events.

What is the difference between lederhosen and bundhosen?

Lederhosen are short, above-the-knee leather breeches. Bundhosen are the knee-length style.

Do you offer custom-made lederhosen?

Yes. Through our Outfit Studio you can personalise leather type, colour and Alpine embroidery.

How do I choose the right lederhosen size?

Lederhosen should fit snugly at first, as genuine leather stretches over time.

How long does delivery take?

Production takes 1–2 weeks, then delivery in 8–10 working days. Rush production is available.
