Plus Size Dirndl — Authentic Bavarian Trachten Built for Extended Sizes
Our plus size dirndl collection — known in German as Übergröße Dirndl — brings authentic Bavarian Trachten to extended sizes with the same construction quality, traditional fabrics, and cultural integrity as our standard size range. These are not standard patterns scaled up. They are dirndls designed from the ground up for plus-size proportions, with the structural adjustments that extended sizes genuinely require. Same authentic Mieder, same gathered Rock, same traditional Schürze — engineered for the bodies that wear them.
Plus-size dirndls require redrafted bodice darts, reinforced waistband construction, and proportionally cut aprons — not simply larger pattern pieces. Our plus-size patterns are designed separately from standard sizes, with the structural integrity extended sizes genuinely need.
Same genuine cotton, linen, and silk-blend fabrics. Same hand-finished hems, hook-and-eye bodice closures, and traditional Schnürung (lacing) as our standard-size dirndls. Plus-size buyers receive identical craftsmanship — never costume-tier shortcuts.
Plus-size construction is available across every dirndl length — above-the-knee mini for modern Wiesn style, mid-calf midi for traditional all-occasion wear, and floor-length maxi for formal Trachten events. The same proportion engineering applies to all three.
The historical reality
Plus-Size Trachten Has Always Existed — A Brief History
The framing of plus-size dirndls as a "modern accommodation" or new inclusive category is historically inaccurate. Bavarian Trachten was always worn by all body types — the modern absence of properly constructed plus-size Trachten is a 20th-century retail problem, not a tradition.
Trachten as Alpine Working Wear
The dirndl originated in Alpine farming communities across Bavaria, Tyrol, Salzburg, and the Austrian Alps — as the everyday dress of rural working women. Alpine farming communities historically included women of every body type, every stage of life, every shape after childbearing and physical labour. They all wore Trachten daily for centuries. Each dirndl was cut to the wearer by village seamstresses, not standardised across body types that did not exist as a concept.
The Industrial Standardisation Problem
Industrial dirndl production in the 20th century introduced standardised sizing — but the upper end of those size ranges was set by average body measurements of the time, not by the actual range of bodies that historically wore Trachten. Plus-size buyers were quietly excluded from authentic production and pushed toward costume-tier "Bavarian beer maid" outfits with no relationship to genuine Trachten craftsmanship.
Restoring the Tradition
Properly engineered plus-size dirndls are not a modern "inclusion gesture" — they are a return to how dirndls were always meant to be made. Authentic Trachten construction for every body is the historical norm; standardised sizing charts that exclude extended sizes are the modern aberration. Plus-size Trachten belongs in Bavarian cultural life, and always has.
The engineering reality
Why a Properly Made Plus-Size Dirndl Is Different From a Scaled Standard Pattern
To understand why our plus-size dirndls are different from "extended size" dirndls at other retailers, you need to understand how dirndl construction actually works. This is what most retailers do not explain.
The Mieder (Bodice) Engineering Difference
The dirndl bodice is the most structured garment in Bavarian Trachten — it functions almost like a corset, shaping the waist while supporting the bust. Scaling up a standard bodice pattern does not produce a properly supportive plus-size bodice. The dart placement, bust shaping, and lacing tension all need to be redesigned for the extended size — not just enlarged. A scaled-up bodice gaps at the waist, pulls at the bust, or fails to provide structural support. Our plus-size bodices are drafted from plus-size pattern blocks, not stretched smaller ones.
The Reinforced Waistband Requirement
A full traditional dirndl skirt with proper gathering weighs more on the waistband at extended sizes. Standard waistband construction will stretch, warp, or rip over time under the additional load. Our plus-size dirndls use reinforced waistband construction — heavier stay-tape, double-stitched seams, and stronger fabric grain alignment. This is invisible from the outside but doubles the lifespan of the garment in extended sizes.
The Schürze (Apron) Proportion Math
The traditional Schürze covers most of the dirndl skirt front, with a narrow band of dirndl visible at the hem. For plus-size dirndls, the apron width and length must be increased proportionally — otherwise the apron looks undersized and the silhouette visually unbalances. Our plus-size aprons are cut to proper proportion automatically. Standard aprons from other retailers will look undersized on plus-size dirndls.
The Schnürung (Lacing) Adjustment Range
The lace-up back of an authentic dirndl provides several centimetres of adjustment — important for any fit, more important at extended sizes where weight can fluctuate over a Trachten season. Our plus-size dirndls use longer lacing channels and stronger eyelet reinforcement to extend the adjustment range and ensure the lacing holds shape over years of wear.

Plus Size Dirndl Sizing Guide
How to Measure
- Bust: measure around the fullest part of your bust, with a normal-fit bra on. Keep the tape level and snug.
- Waist: measure around your natural waist — the narrowest part of your torso, typically just above the navel.
- Hip: measure around the fullest part of your hips. Keep the tape level all the way around.

When standard sizing isn't enough
Custom Plus-Size Dirndl Orders
Our standard plus-size range (German 52–60) covers most extended-size buyers. If your measurements fall outside this range, or if your proportions don't match the chart cleanly — for example, a much larger bust-to-waist gap than the standard chart assumes — we offer custom-cut plus-size dirndls on request.
When to Consider a Custom Order
- Your measurements exceed German size 60 (above 154 cm bust / 136 cm waist).
- Your proportions don't match the standard chart. For example: a 130 cm bust with a 95 cm waist falls between sizes 52 and 56 in different rows of the chart.
- You need a non-standard skirt length. Taller wearers above 178 cm or shorter wearers below 158 cm may want a custom hem position.
- You've had fit issues with extended sizes from other retailers and want a dirndl cut specifically to your body.
If any of these apply, contact our team to discuss a custom order. We will review your measurements and confirm whether we can accommodate your specifications, along with the expected production timeline.

Plus-size styling notes
Styling Notes for Plus-Size Dirndls
The same authentic Bavarian styling principles apply to plus-size dirndls as to any size — with a few specific notes for extended-size proportions.
- Dirndlbluse (blouse): Choose a blouse with proper structural construction — boning, structured neckline, or built-in support. Loose stretchy blouses often fail at extended sizes. See our Dirndl Blouse collection → for plus-size compatible options.
- Schürze (apron): Choose an apron proportional to your dirndl size. Our plus-size dirndls ship with properly proportioned aprons by default. Standard-sized aprons from other retailers will look undersized — make sure the apron matches the dirndl proportion.
- Charivari and jewellery: Slightly heavier-weight jewellery balances the visual proportion of an extended-size silhouette better than delicate pieces. A traditional Charivari (silver chain with hunting charms) or substantial Hirschhornkette reads as properly proportioned.
- The Schleife (apron bow): The same Bavarian relationship code applies — left = single, right = taken, centre = young or virgin, back = widow or service staff. This convention applies to every authentic dirndl regardless of size. See our complete Size & Fit Guide → for full detail.
- Colour selection: Plus-size dirndls work especially well in deep jewel tones — emerald, burgundy, navy, forest green — and traditional black. Bold colours read confidently at extended sizes. Soft pastels also work well for spring and summer Wiesn occasions.
